20 Best Foods Around the World. In these stressful and uncertain times of quarantine, people all over the world are looking for comfort to eat. Comfortable lining can fix every bad day. It is usually rich in sugar, fat, and/or salt. It’s rooted in where you came from and with whom you grew up. We asked 20 people from different cultural backgrounds to tell them what comfort dishes are for them.
Korean: kimchi jjigae
I’ll start with mine. My favorite food is kimchi jjigae or kimchi stew. I am Korean and grew up when my mother used to prepare Kimchi Jigae for dinner quite often. My mother’s Kimchi Jjigae has this rug son. Son-Mat in Korean means a taste by hand. The best way to describe it is my mother’s special touch. Even if I try to make my mother’s kimchi-jjigae here in New York, I can’t get that flavor because it lacks my mother’s special touch. Basically, the flavors you get are spicy, salty, fatty, bitter. That’s basically all I crave when I miss my mother.
Nigerian: Okra Soup
Tomi Abebe: I’m Nigerian and one of my favorite foods should be amala and okra soup. To make it, take a little yam flour and pour it into boiling water, stir very quickly and this beautiful thick consistency comes to this beautiful thick consistency. From there, the portion to the desired size for your meal. And then you can dip it in a soup of your choice. And not only is it a super tasty meal, but after eating it, it hits you and puts you in one of those beautiful food commas. I remember when I was a little boy he snuck into the kitchen, trying to tear off small pieces of Amala or the eru seeds they put in the soup, and brought them back to my playroom. So now, every time I have it, I think automatically at home.
Trinidadian: Salted Fish
Sarah Isoke: I’m a Trinidadian and my favorite food is baking and salted fish. Baking and salted fish is a dish consisting of baking, which is an extended mass, and a fish called cod. It is a salted cod, which we cut, cook, and fries with sweet tomatoes and sweet onions. I think it’s my favorite food just because it brings a souvenir from my grandmother. I used to have a nursery, and every time he did something with dough, like baking, he rolled up small pieces of dough and gave them to the kids to play. And we’d be crazy about those little pieces of pasta.
American: White Cheese
NajaNewell: I’m from New York and my favorite food is grilled cheese. Raised as a demanding dining room, grilled cheese was the number one you could get from every family member and every individual restaurant, and it is exactly the same almost always. If I make a grilled cheese for me today, I only use white or wheat bread and use American white cheese. It reminds me of being my mother’s best friend.
Jamaican: Meat Pies
Alyson Brown: I’m Alyson Brown and today we’re going to talk about meat pies because this is my favorite Jamaican food. Growing up, my father always brought home a box of meat pies. And he always put them on the table, and came first, grind first, and if you did not get your meat pie, you would be firm. I love veal cakes because they are very diverse. You could get a beef pie, a calloo burger, a patty ackee, any kind of burger. My family is Jamaican. They’re from Jamaica. I’m an American. I was born here. But if we go to Jamaica, it’s over. The empanadas are hot and ready. They’re delicious.

Dominican: Mangu Food
Manuel Silva-Paulus: I’m from New York, I’m Dominican and my favorite food is Mangu. Mangu is basically like mashed potatoes, but instead of potatoes, it’s banana. And it’s breakfast, so most Dominicans will eat it in the morning. Mangu is usually eaten with onions, that is, onions; fried cheese on the side, which is fried cheese; salami, which is a kind of meaning; and usually some people receive a fried egg in it. Personally, I love eggs, so I always wear them. The reason Mangu is my favorite food is that it is delicious that it just reminds me to be in the Dominican Republic and just being in the Dominican Republic, as in good weather, sunny, like a great atmosphere around the world.
Selena Singh: My comfort dinner is Pepperpot. He was one of the first humans in Guyana, known as the Indians. Pepperpot is a meal cooked with cassareep and spices and every meat selection, but my personal favorite is beef. It can be eaten with anything: bread, yucca bread, rice, whatever you want. Pepperpot reminds me of Christmas and all the family time and rich culture in Guyana.
Samantha Lee: My favorite food is rice porridge, a kind of rice porridge. It is often eaten with Yau yeah Gwai, also known as Chinese donuts. I just had it, with dried scallops, canned egg and salted pork and only white fish. Growing up, my mother prepared this for breakfast for a few days, and she did it for me too when I was sick and could not keep solid food away. My mother passed away in January 2018, so the process of making and eating congee reminds me of her love, dedication and patience as my mother.
Isabella Paoletto: I’m Mexican and my favorite food is Tamales. Every year my grandmother and her sisters meet and make all the tamales we can eat on Christmas Eve, so it really reminds me of home, Christmas, and my family, so it’s very special. My family makes the plate of grated pork in a red chili sauce with green olives. Basically, right now, only my grandmother and my aunts know how to do it, but they started to teach me,
Thai: Noodle Soup
Nisha Stickles: My favorite food is Kuay Teaw or Thai noodle soup. Thai noodle soup is the Thai equivalent of what is a delicacy sandwich for New Yorkers. And you can customize any Kuay Teaw order to be yours. My order is Kuay Teaw Pé, so duck noodle soup with Sen Mee, which are rice noodles that are thinner than the ones you have in Pho. And I’m just going to eat it in this noodle store, and I refuse to have it somewhere else because they make it so special. And it sucks because I really can’t replicate this experience in any Thai restaurant here, because they don’t really specialize in it.
Jennifer Hernández: My favorite food is the Colombian Arepas. Arepas are empanadas from corn flour, which are usually made with salt, water, and masarepa. This is my favorite food because as a kid, my father and I didn’t have any suitable schedule at all. So when she got home, she was already asleep, and we wouldn’t see each other before the weekend. And on weekends, our favorite pastime in the family was doing Arepas. It was also the first meal I learned to make. So we met in our small kitchen. Mold them together, put them on the stove, and as soon as they were ready and hot, my father put butter on top, sprinkled them with a little cheese and it was delicious. And it’s still one of my favorite foods.
Spanish: Puerto Rican Yuca cakes
Cory Villegas: My favorite food is Puerto Rican Yuca cakes. In Spanish, we call it “Amasa”. It’s like a pasty thing. It’s like… you can put things on it. So, you can put meat, chicken, you can put greens. I mean, they wrap it around a banana leaf and then cook it. And we make them in large quantities. I mean, it’s two to three days. It’s my favorite food of comfort because my aunts and my mother are sitting around, we talk and make this dish that is so reminiscent of our Puerto Rican culture.
Middle East: Lahmajun
Caroline Aghajanian: My comfort meal is Lahmajun. It is a thin flatbread, almost like pizza, enjoyed in and around the Middle East. Usually, it is prepared by taking small dumplings and smoothing them into very thin pieces, and then cooked with beef or lamb, some vegetables and spices, and then cooked in the oven for a few minutes. My family and I usually buy a dozen of them at Armenian bakeries or grocery stores here in Los Angeles, because they make them really delicious.
Peru: Aji de Gallina
Arturo Valenzuela: My food is Aji de Gallina. It’s a spicy chicken mix my grandmother did all the time. A yellow pepper found in Peru, Aji Amarillo, is mixed with, fry a few onions, then add chicken broth, milk and crackers or bread. It’s a good pasta sauce, and then with a little boiled chicken, you crushed. Aji de Gallina only reminds me of Peru in general. My grandfather lived there and he was 50, 80 chickens, and my grandmother just grabbed one and it would be cool.
Pakistani: Aloo Ki Tarkari
Ruqayyah Moynihan: I am a British Pakistani and my favorite spirit is a dish called Aloo Ki Tarkari. The reason I love this dish so much is that its curry. It’s very carby instead of one with a lot of sauce. My mother usually adds aloo, potatoes; chili; salt; Haldi, turmeric; and then adds something called Panch phoron, which is a mixture of five spices. Mix spices, fry them, add their crushed potatoes, add water, boil the water and let the potatoes break. It’s really touching very good taste. And it also reminds me to go home from school and cook with my mother to cook with my mother’s mother, who passed away a few years ago.
Brazilian: Cheese Bread And Feijoada
Barbara Corbellini Duarte: My two favorite Brazilian dishes are cheese bread and feijoada. There is definitely no reason for cheese bread. He’s always everywhere. It is certainly the food I miss most because it’s just the perfect snack. Feijoada is basically a huge black bean soup. It’s definitely something I grew up with, and it’s very iconic in Brazil. Almost everyone eats it.
Aynor Elkasaby: My favorite food needs to be full, these are fava beans. And it’s very easy to do, so we do it all the time. It contains tomatoes, onions, some people put tahini on it and we put a lot of spices on it. Usually, people eat it with pita bread. It’s my favorite food because my grandfather would do a lot for breakfast in the summer. So we woke up and I’d be there.
